subaru outback and ford edge
Do you know how sometimes the vehicle everyone can’t stop talking about ends up being more hype than substance, and the whole time it was the vehicle that didn’t get as much attention that turns out to be everything you need? After taking a look at the 2020 Ford Edge vs. the Subaru Outback, that’s kind of how we feel about the Edge.

As of this writing, Ford has sold 76,862 of the Edge in 2020 while the Outback has sold just under 12,000 of the Outback. It’s a classic case of more popular not equaling better. That’s not to say the Edge isn’t a good choice. The Ford Edge is a quality midsize SUV; there is no doubt about that. Let’s take a look at some of the features that draw so many car buyers.

Ford Edge Starting Price: $32,095

When shopping for a 2-row SUV, many buyers start their search with the Edge. If you opt for the ST trim, you’ll get 335 HP, pretty impressive tech, and an easy-to-drive 8-speed automatic. The safety features are augmented by the driver-assistance package, which is standard on all trim levels.

The available trim levels include SE, SEL, Titanium, and ST. The Titanium Elite bumps up the style a bit with contrast stitching and chrome accents. The problem is that the style, in general, is a tad bit dated since this Ford offering hasn’t had a revamp since 2015. The interior is decent; it’s just not special. The seats are slightly lacking in support, which can mean an uncomfortable road trip—or even an uncomfortable daily commute.

Still, that aside, the Ford Edge remains a solid choice.

Subaru Outback Starting Price: $26,795

For all of that, the Subaru Outback edges out the competition (see what we did there?) to earn its place as one of the year’s best midsize SUVs. The Outback stands out by offering a complete redesign for 2020 that includes:

  • Updated Technology: All models come with impressive tech and safety features, such as automatic emergency braking, high-beam assist, adaptive cruise control, hill descent control, Starlink infotainment system, and more.
  • Upgraded Engine: The higher trim levels boast an updated turbo engine, superior ground clearance, and standard AWD that makes the Outback a better choice off-road and on the streets.
  • Several Trim Packages: Seven trim packages are available, so it’s easy to fully customize this midsize SUV to perfectly meet your needs and your budget.

Speaking of budget, the highest trim level, the Touring, starts at $33,445, which is just $1,300 more than the Ford Edge base model. When you look at both SUVs side by side, it comes down to one question: Do you really want to pay more for less?
